2013 was a year of crossing off a bunch of bucket list bands and songs to see live. It wasn’t the most stand out year… probably because I didn’t really attend as many major concerts this year. I missed out on a bunch of concerts in Vancouver including two I seriously wish I hadn’t missed. I wasn’t there to see Pearl Jam perform ‘Jeremy’ live in Vancouver. And I missed out on seeing Nine Inch Nails in Vancouver as well. But there were still a ton of memorable major moments I was able to capture on video So let’s get to my Top 20 Magmazing Major Concert Moments of 2013.
1. – Paramore in Vancouver- Ain’t It Fun [feat. the Sir Charles Tupper Secondary Choir] (October 16, 2013)
My most watched new video of 2013. Paramore performed what will be their first single of 2014 in ‘Ain’t it Fun’. When I first heard this song playing the concert setlist in my car as I was driving to Vancouver I found myself putting the song on repeat a few times. It has such a catchy hook to it. During the performance Hayley Williams brought the Sir James Tupper Secondary Choir on stage in gospel style robes to perform with the band. Now, through out Paramore’s tour they brought a choir on at every show, but I guess my video was the first well shot video of the “choir moment” on the tour to be posted on YouTube because judging by all the tweets, Paramore fans were going nuts.
One thing I learned from posting this video is that Paramore is ridiculously popular in Brazil. But none of this is the main reason this video is my #1 moment of 2013. No, the fact is most of the hits this video weren’t directly from fans reposting it. It was because Paramore noticed one fan’s repost of the video, retweeted that person and then posted the video on their Facebook page… a page with 27-million likes. It’s the first time any major recording artist with that big of a fanbase has has shared a video I shot in such a way. The post on Facebook was shared 371 times, liked 10,066 times and commented on 202 times.
It’s unfortunate that the venue for the concert was moved from the Pacific Coliseum to the smaller PNE Forum, but hopefully my video shows people in and around Vancouver that they missed out on a great concert.
2. – City and Colour at Rock The Shores 2013- Thirst (July 13, 2013)
An unforgettable moment from Rock the Shores in Victoria in July. During City and Colour’s performance of ‘Thirst’, Dallas Green noticed that the daughter of the photography coordinator of the festival was in the photo pit dancing along to the song and decided to bring her on stage. When Ella got on stage she sat mesmerized by the 10,000 people looking on despite Dallas trying to coax her to dance. The best part was Dallas didn’t miss a beat or note through the whole process. Finally during an extended instrumental portion of the song towards the end Ella was finally convinced to dance.
3. – Phoenix & R. Kelly at Coachella 2013 Weekend One- Ignition (April 13, 2013)
And the award for most bizarre cameo in a music festival headlining set goes to… R. Kelly showing up to perform a mashup of his song Ignition with Phoenix’s 1901… Phoenix being a headliner was already weird enough. Then there were all the rumors and hype about Daft Punk making a surprise appearance. When R. Kelly started by singing the opening lines from his song ‘Bump N’ Grind’ I think half the audience was wondering “Why is someone singing an R. Kelly song?” and the other half was wondering “who the hell is that?” I guess the bizarreness of the whole situation is what made it memorable and #3 on my top moments of 2013.
4. – Reignwolf at Rock The Shores 2013- In The Dark (July 14, 2013)
Reignwolf stole the show at Rock The Shores 2013. He was the very first to perform on the second day of the music festival and he is the only opening act at a music festival that I have EVER seen receive so much audience reaction that he performed an encore.
5. – Hey Ocean! at the BC Legislature- Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) [Arcade Fire cover] (July 1, 2013)
My favourite Arcade Fire song beautifully covered by Vancouver’s Hey Ocean! live on Canada Day with the lights of the BC Legislature in the background. This is just one of the best looking videos I shot all year, hands down.
6. – Blur at Coachella 2013 Weekend One- Song 2 (April 12, 2013)
Another “bucket list” song I’ve wanted to see live since I was in high school. I’ve never seen Blur live. So seeing Song 2 on the main stage at Coachella 2013 was a major moment for me and is #6 on my list this year.
8. – The Postal Service at Coachella 2013 Weekend One- Nothing Better (April 13, 2013)
Another song I’ve wanted to see performed live for a long time. So getting Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis’ duet on video was a highlight of my year. One of the most surprising things about The Postal Service live is how many guys were belting lyrics out during the set. Did not expect that…
When I heard Shaggy was coming to Victoria I was shocked. Here’s an artists from my high school days coming to my hometown to perform at a nightclub. I’ve always wanted to see him perform ‘Boombastic’ live and that happened, but it’s this performance of his mega-hit ‘Angel’ that gets the nod in my top 10. A. because Rayvon performed with him and B. the crowd went nuts for the song.
11. – The Lumineers at Coachella 2013 Weekend One- Slow It Down (April 14, 2013)
So I posted a bunch of video from The Lumineers set at Coachella not thinking anything of it when suddenly I noticed a spike in hits for supposedly no reason. Then I discovered fans of Glee’s Chris Colfer were all going nuts over the fact he was in the background watching the performance side stage and standing with someone that fans seem to argue whether or not is someone he’s going out with. This video of ‘Slow It Down’ and a couple other videos garnered thousands of hits simply because of Chris Colfer. I don’t get what the big deal was but that’s why this is my #11 moment of the year.
