2013 was a year of crossing off a bunch of bucket list bands and songs to see live. It wasn’t the most stand out year… probably because I didn’t really attend as many major concerts this year. I missed out on a bunch of concerts in Vancouver including two I seriously wish I hadn’t missed. I wasn’t there to see Pearl Jam perform ‘Jeremy’ live in Vancouver. And I missed out on seeing Nine Inch Nails in Vancouver as well. But there were still a ton of memorable major moments I was able to capture on video So let’s get to my Top 20 Magmazing Major Concert Moments of 2013.
Rykka had a huge year winning the 2013 Peak Performance Project in Vancouver. And for the second year in a row, she performed live at Rifflandia in Victoria. This time she performed a more stripped down set with just her and a guitarist at Royal Athletic Park. At one point in the set she performed a few songs by herself including this beautiful rendition of The Police’s ‘Roxanne’
20. – St. Lucia at Rifflandia 2013- Elevate (September 14, 2013)
St. Lucia had a rough go at Rifflandia 2013. They barely made it to the festival due to flight issues and their Macbook laptop had major technical issues which affected elements of certain songs they had on their setlist. It lead to them restarting songs and delays trying to figure out what was going on. It’s unfortunate because when things were working, their performance was fantastic. I really enjoyed this performance of their single ‘Elevate’. The band’s sound has such an 80’s synth-pop vibe and Jean-Philip Grobler’s voice has a sort of Morrisey quality to it.
Just when I thought I’d had my best year as a concert goer in 2011, in comes 2012 and once again I get blown away at the amount of shows I shot this year.
This year I’ve shot more than 100 sets from house concerts to local gigs at coffee shops to nightclub gigs to arena shows and sets at major music festivals. I have posted more than 650 videos publicly and dozens more were hidden from public view or removed. Whittling things down my ten top moments shot is basically impossible. This year I’ll be splitting things into my 20 major concert moments and 20 local artist moments, but even with that, it’s been extremely difficult picking just 20 videos to feature in each list. I guess that’s part of the challenge and the fun of making these lists.
So here’s my Top 20 Magmazing Major Concert Video Moments I shot in 2012!
17. – Mother Mother at Rifflandia 2012: Let’s Fall in Love – September 16, 2012
Mother Mother performing their single ‘Let’s Fall in Love’ on Rifflandia’s main stage set the tone for the rest of their set. The audio was spot on, the smoke and the lights looked great in the mild end of summer evening. Something about the band performing at night felt so much better compared to their late afternoon set on the same stage last year.

15. – The Stanfields at Rifflandia 2012- Ship to Shore – September 15, 2012
This video was all about the energy. The Stanfields and their Celtic/Folk/East Coast Rock sound just get people moving. Really fun band to listen to. Their must is meant to be heard at a big party with lots of beer. One of the best sets at this year’s Rifflandia.

12. – Grand Analog at Rifflandia 2012- Magnifico – September 16, 2012
One of the quirkiest moments of the year. Winnipeg’s Grand Analog invited a guy name Johnny on stage at Rifflandia to dance during their performance of ‘Magnifico’. Later in the day another person would be dancing on the side stage at Royal Athletic Park, but you’ll see that later in the countdown. Grand Analog seem like the nicest, most down to earth hip hop performers I’ve ever seen live.

8. – The Flaming lips at Rifflandia 2012- Do You Realize – September 14, 2012
The Flaming Lips performed in Victoria. I repeat… The Flaming Lips performed in Victoria, BC… They brought the confetti canons, the costumes, the hamster ball, and the psychedelic screen. The only thing missing was the UFO. Having a band the caliber of the Flaming Lips in Victoria is a huge get and their show is always visually stunning.

9. – Hey Ocean! at Rifflandia 2012- Make a New Dance Up – September 16, 2012
There was just something I can’t put my finger on that made Hey Ocean!’s entire set really special for me. Everything just seemed to be about perfect. The amount of sun on the band was just right, there was a light breeze that made Ashleigh Ball’s dress flow… well… like an ocean wave. The sound recording I captured pretty much sounds like I plugged into a board and the vantage point could not have been better.
There were actually a couple of songs from the band from their Rifflandia 2012 set that I seriously debated over. One of which was ‘New Love’ (click here to see that video). The opening drum beat by Johnny Andrews just sounds incredible… but the moment I picked pretty much had to be the other Andrews on stage later on in the set. That would be Johnny’s nephew Owen when he spontaneously started break dancing on stage during ‘Make a New Dance Up’. How often do you see a cute kid show off his dance moves on a concert stage and have a couple thousand people go nuts? It was a major highlight of Rifflandia this year.

13. – Rich Aucoin at The 2012 Rifflandia War Child Lounge- Are You Experiencing – September 15, 2012
Rich Aucoin has one of the most entertaining live shows. Most of the time his shows involve video that is synced with the music performed and tons of audience participation. I was very interested in how his performance would translate during the day at the War Child Lounge. The Rifflandia War Child Lounge is a series of short, normally intimate acoustic, sets that raise money for the War Child Canada charity. This video is a shining example of the audience participation aspect of his live show and involved a parachute that you might remember for elementary school gym class.

14. – Everlast at Rifflandia 2012- What It’s Like – September 16, 2012
I have to say I was a bit shocked that Everlast was on the Rifflandia lineup. I didn’t even realize he was touring. I thought about choosing his Johnny Cash cover, but I chose this moment basically because it’s Everlast’s biggest hit of the late 90s. Plus his deep raspy voice is really cool. About the only thing that would have been a bigger moment than ‘What It’s Like’ is if he performed something from his House of Pain days.

11. – Reggie Watts at Rifflandia 2012- Canada – September 16, 2012
Reggie Watts is a sight to behold live. He’s a beatboxing, improvising, singing comedian. It’s amazing watching him compose a song on the fly only using his voice and a loop recorder while at the same time making up lyrics and showing a wide vocal range. Plus there’s his hair… Here he makes up a song about his observations about Canada. Not the type of act you normally see on the main stage of a festival, but a real treat to watch.
