2013 was a year of crossing off a bunch of bucket list bands and songs to see live. It wasn’t the most stand out year… probably because I didn’t really attend as many major concerts this year. I missed out on a bunch of concerts in Vancouver including two I seriously wish I hadn’t missed. I wasn’t there to see Pearl Jam perform ‘Jeremy’ live in Vancouver. And I missed out on seeing Nine Inch Nails in Vancouver as well. But there were still a ton of memorable major moments I was able to capture on video So let’s get to my Top 20 Magmazing Major Concert Moments of 2013.
When I heard Shaggy was coming to Victoria I was shocked. Here’s an artists from my high school days coming to my hometown to perform at a nightclub. I’ve always wanted to see him perform ‘Boombastic’ live and that happened, but it’s this performance of his mega-hit ‘Angel’ that gets the nod in my top 10. A. because Rayvon performed with him and B. the crowd went nuts for the song.
Just when I thought I’d had my best year as a concert goer in 2011, in comes 2012 and once again I get blown away at the amount of shows I shot this year.
This year I’ve shot more than 100 sets from house concerts to local gigs at coffee shops to nightclub gigs to arena shows and sets at major music festivals. I have posted more than 650 videos publicly and dozens more were hidden from public view or removed. Whittling things down my ten top moments shot is basically impossible. This year I’ll be splitting things into my 20 major concert moments and 20 local artist moments, but even with that, it’s been extremely difficult picking just 20 videos to feature in each list. I guess that’s part of the challenge and the fun of making these lists.
So here’s my Top 20 Magmazing Major Concert Video Moments I shot in 2012!
7. – The Hives at Club 9ONE9- Wait a Minute – September 5, 2012
The Hives are another band I was stunned to find out were going to perform in Victoria… and even more stunned they were performing in a nightclub! You don’t get much closer to a band than when they perform at a nightclub, especially if the night club is Club 9ONE9. With it’s low ceiling and lowered dance floor pit right against the stage it to me has always been a great venue for its sight lines. This video of their single ‘Wait a Minute’ off their latest album just shows how intimate the setting was and how fun the show was to be at.

Former CBC Cover Me Canada contestant and 2012 top 20 Peak Performance Project finalist, Ali Milner opened for Jose James live at Club 9ONE9 in Victoria, BC for the 2012 TD Victoria International JazzFest on Sunday June 24, 2012.
Big Wreck kicked off their first national tour since reuniting at Club 9One9 in Victoria, BC on Saturday April 28, 2012.
I planned shooting a lot of video, but unfortunately during the recording of the my first video, I was tapped on the shoulder by a bouncer who simply said “no video buddy”. For some reason he didn’t seem to notice I was wearing microphones on my shoulders. From then I decided to not shoot any video until the encore. Once the encore starts, who cares if you get kicked out of a venue?
So I shot two songs, but I have an audio recording of the entire set. Don’t know if I’ll do anything with the audio though.
The videos below are the encore. I had the camera lower than I’d normally like, but I wanted to avoid being caught again.
